“Sooooo, I have a gig for you. Do you want to shoot the boys gig on Saturday night?”
This was a message I received on the 26th of January 2021 from my friend Elise. Obviously, I replied “Yes please”. Obviously because I am a photographer and its what I love to do, but more obviously because it’s my first paid photography job, since the incident last year… But more on that in another post.
Immediately my creative brain kicks into gear. Exploding with ideas of the kind of shots I am going to get and as my passion extends to cinematography, I am also thinking about the type of cinematic shots that I am going to get.
But then just before I can act on those positive and creative thoughts…
The self-doubt sets in.
What if I am not as good as other photographers?
What if the lighting sucks?
What if the shots aren’t in focus?
What If I make a fool of myself?
Not going to lie. The thought of doing this shoot scared the absolute shit out of me. I am naturally a landscape photographer. As much as I love to capture special moments of people, I haven’t yet done enough of it to be 100% confident in my ability.
I guess there is only one way to grow my portrait portfolio and that is to just do it.
But before I can do that, I must do my research. So, I ask for help from the best teacher I’ve ever had, YouTube. ‘The do’s and don’ts of band photography’. After watching a couple videos addressing this topic it became clear to me, while all these videos has different information. They all come to the same conclusion. ‘Have fun with it’. It was at this point my creative brain starts to come back to me and I began to feel confident in my ability to deliver great looking photos.
